All NEW short-term rentals:  Effective Jan. 1, 2023, the revised short-term rental ordinance takes effect. Please view the STR Changes document below.  

All EXISTING short-term rental license holders:  You need to abide by the revised short-term rental ordinance by Feb. 28, 2023. Properties requiring an exterior sign will be able to print and use their STR license for this purpose after their 2023 renewal is completed and approved. Please view the STR Changes document below. 

It is important that short-term rental owners, operators, and Vail residents understand these changes and follow the appropriate steps  to be approved which are outlined below.

Short Term Rental License Steps

If you are interested in renting your property for periods of less than 30 consecutive days, you qualify as operating short-term rental lodging within the Town of Vail.  

Please follow these steps: 

  1. Review STR changes & ordinance above 
  2. Collect documents listed below under “Individual Property Owners” or “Professional Property Managers”
  3. Insure your property is ready for a fire inspection, if applicable: STR Safety Inspection Checklist. You will schedule for the fire inspection when applying for your license online, in step 4
  4. Once steps 1 through 3 are complete, follow the instructions on how to apply for your short-term rental license. If you are a Professional Property Manager, follow along with these instructions. To go directly to our licensing portal click here.  

Documents required for a short-term rental license

Individual Property Owners

Important: YOU MUST have the following FORMS completed and ready to upload with your application:

  • Notarized and initialed Short-Term Rental Self-Compliance Affidavit
  • Signed Short-Term Rental Local Representative & Owner Authorization Form
  • A copy of the designated local representative’s driver’s license showing a physical address within 60 minutes of the rental property
  • A copy of the notice sent with proof of USPS mailing to the owner of adjoining residential unit in your duplex (if required)
  • Insurance policy with a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability coverage and states that it covers short-term rental activity. If you are using an approved online marketplace facilitator's insurance, you can complete this affidavit in lieu of the insurance policy upload. Currently, Airbnb, VRBO, and Evolve are accepted.
  • Approved fire inspection document from Vail Fire Department, if 24/7 management services not available at all times for your property.
  • Method of payment for the $260.00 license fee – Bank Account Information or Credit Card.
Professional Property Managers

This application is only valid for property managers with a Town of Vail business license. 

All businesses and individuals acting as property managers for short-term rentals in the Town of Vail are required to obtain a separate business license, regardless of office location. To obtain a property management business license, follow along with the instructions in the tab “application instructions,” on page two. 

Important: YOU MUST have the following FORMS completed and ready to upload with your application.

  • Signed Short-Term Rental Local Representative & Property Manager Authorization Form
  • A copy of the notice sent with proof of USPS mailing to the owner of adjoining residential unit in a duplex (if required).
  • A copy of the designated representative’s driver license showing a physical address within 60 minutes of all short-term rentals.
  • Insurance policy with a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability coverage and states that it covers short-term rental activity. We can also accept a property manager's commercial liability insurance policy that covers their short-term rental properties. If you are using an approved online marketplace facilitator's insurance, you can complete this affidavit in lieu of the insurance policy upload. Currently, Airbnb, VRBO, and Evolve are accepted.
  • Approved fire inspection document from Vail Fire Department, if 24/7 management services not available at all times for the property.
  • Method of payment for the $260.00 license fee  for offsite management or $50.00 for those that provide 24/7 onsite management– Bank Account Information or Credit Card.
